NetEase.com Inc. (NASDAQ: NTES), a leading Internet technology company based in China, again celebrated the news that the NetEase Web site, www.163.com, was ranked number one in China in terms of unique home Internet users and number of home page views. This is the second consecutive month that the NetEase Web site has placed number one in the surveys conducted by iamasia, the leader in Internet audience measurement for the Asia-Pacific region. The report also revealed that the NetEase Web site held the position as the number one Web Property for home users in China for the second consecutive month.
According to iamasia’s ratings data for the month of September 2000, NetEase Web site (www.163.com) hosted visits from an incredible 70.3% of active home Internet users in China, posting a 39% increase over the previous month’s home reach of 50.7%. NetEase also achieved a benchmark by becoming the first portal in China to record 1 billion home page views in a month.
In just one month, NetEase Web properties also saw a 38% increase in overall home reach, maintaining its leading position, according to iamasia’s findings. In addition to the number one position of 163.com, two additional NetEase Web sites were ranked among the top twenty Web sites in China, including the sixth ranked yeah.net and the 14th ranked 126.com.
NetEase’s number one home Web property ranking in September is particularly impressive following the recent merger between Sohu.com and ChinaRen. “NetEase’s popular 163.com site continues to outperform our strongest competition, such as Sina.com and Sohu.com, in terms of overall reach amongst unique home Internet users,” remarked King Lai, NetEase Chief Executive Officer. “This again demonstrates that NetEase has developed the products and services that appeal to China’s growing Internet population and we will continue to exceed their expectations with more innovative offerings.”
NetEase.com Inc. has also been recently listed among the World’s 300 Best Small Companies for 2001 by the prestigious Forbes Global Magazine. The magazine’s October 30, 2000 edition places NetEase among the ranks of the world’s 300 best publicly listed companies with a market capitalization of US$500 million or less. Newly listed companies, including NetEase, named on Forbes’ list are expected to emerge as important, profitable players in the next two years according to expert opinions gathered by the renowned business publication.
“With the combination of recent results from both iamasia and Forbes Global Magazine, NetEase clearly offers an increasingly attractive marketing profile to advertisers, “ said Susan Chen, NetEase Chief Operating Officer. “We are the first portal in China to reach 1 billion home page views in a month and more than 70% of China’s home Internet users, whom represent a highly educated and relatively high income demographic in China.”
“We are committed to making NetEase Web sites the leading online network in China,” added Chen. “In August, we launched a new TV campaign with the theme of ‘Power to the People’ to extend our brand recognition to make the NetEase brand synonymous with the Internet. We have also continued to launch cutting-edge and user-friendly online services and products targeted at Chinese Internet users, such as the unveiling of our next-generation search engine powered by Google and our new directory which uses open directory methodology in September. These initiatives have paid off as evidenced by the iamasia ratings data.”
NetEase’s Web site, 163.com, has been selected twice as the most popular Web site in China in semi-annual surveys conducted by the China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC). In addition, NetEase has been ranked the highest of all Chinese portals for nine consecutive months since December 1999 on the Alexa 1,000 list. Alexa (www.alexa.com) is a leading provider of Internet intelligence that enables businesses and consumers to make informed decisions about their market place.
